d:mic/fac fills a mid-market niche by presenting culturally-diverse, independent dance artists. These artists work in a general contemporary genre and are often known for self-presenting. Because of its multi-disciplinary nature, d:mic/fac is a excellent choice for both seasoned art aficionados as well as new dance audiences. Since being founded in 2000 by Yvonne Ng under the umbrella of princess productions, eight festivals of d:mic/fac have been produced.
The mission of d:mic/fac is
- to be an biennial, mid-scale, high production value festival for contemporary dance in Canada;
- to provide recognized and valued Canadian dance artists, both established and emerging, with a platform that is unique to themselves;
- to provide the entire technical team and production expertise necessary to create a world-class performance giving the guest artists the opportunity to focus solely on the quality of the presentation;
- to have a programme that is not just about contemporary dance but about unique world-class performances that transcend artistic and cultural boundaries; and
- to be the only festival that cross-pollinates the audiences of both established and emerging artists.
The mandate of d:mic/fac is

to produce a biennial one week festival in August, that includes shared performances in our curated Mainstage presentation and What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG), a lottery-based late-night presentation in Toronto;

to present 14 – 16 professional artists that would not otherwise have the opportunity to share a performance venue;

to invite the guest artists to teach workshops to the general public during the festival;

to use the infrastructure of princess productions for all production services including marketing/promotion,administration and technical teams;

to facilitate mentoring experiences for the emerging artists of theMainstage program throughout the production period; and
-
to incorporate the influence of guest artists into the presentation of their work but assume total responsibility for allproduction activity.
Further complementing the dance programming is Ng’s commitment to exposing the audience to dance through more than just performance by transforming the venue into an art gallery where the selected visual works set the stage for the dance works the audience will see. Outreach activities further the audience experience and include moderated pre-show and post show chats, Soirees with our Dance Ambassadors and workshops taught by the dance artists in the festival’s preceding weeks. All together making for an entirely unique multi-faceted experience of dance. Consider the artists that have already been presented and a clearer picture will emerge: the inaugural season in November 2001 brought together Susan Lee with Katherine Duncanson and then in November 2002, Kathleen Rea with Marie-Josée Chartier.
